Educated at Eton, Fiennes served with the Scots Greys for a time before joining the SAS. In 1968, he joined the Army of the Sultan of Oman, and in 1970 was awarded the Sultan's Bravery medal.
Since 1969, when he led the British expedition on the White Nile, Sir Ranulph has been at the forefront of many exploratory expeditions. From 1979-82, Fiennes embarked on 'Transglobe' - the first circumnavigation of the world's polar axis with Charles Burton. In 1986, together with Dr Michael Stroud, he achieved 'the furthest north unsupported' record during a North Polar Expedition. The Anglo Soviet North Pole expedition in 1990-1 achieved the furthest north record. The Ubar Expedition in 1991 discovered Ptolemy's long-lost Atlantis of the Sands, the frankincense centre of the world. In 1992-93, the Pentland South Pole Expedition with Dr Stroud achieved the first unsupported crossing of the Antarctic continent- the longest unsupported polar journey in history.
